Man vs Horse

October 11th 2014

10 Mile , 26.2 Mile, and Ultra-Marathon 50k adventures

The concept: The 26.2 mile distance is a Man vs Horse event and is open to walkers, runners and riders competing head-to-head (there is a slightly staggered start).
As an extra incentive for this distance, there is cash prize for overall first place. For 2014 if a runner wins he/she will take home a $1,500.00 cash prize, if it is won by horse and rider, they will take home $500.00
Sorry but no dogs allowed at this distance (just too far).
Aid Stations:
There are water stations every two miles and full aid every four miles.

Course Description:
Starts the same as the 10 mile description above. After that you head up Indian Wells canyon and climb slowly and steadily (elevation gain of ~2,300) for 8 miles to the Owen's Peak trail head (there are a handful of steep sections but they are relatively short). The trail consists primarily of fire roads and Jeep trails. The terrain on this loop varies wildly and if you're doing it on horseback; shoes or hoof boots are required. If you're a barefoot runner, foot placement is key through about a mile of this leg as some loose rock will try to get to know you better. Once you hit the Owen's Peak Trail head, high-five the aid station crew, refuel, take in the view, and make a B-line the final 8 miles back down the mountain, there will be a cold one waiting for you back at the brewery!

AWARDS:
Here is where it gets a really exciting. Fastest overall Marathon time wins cash! Odds favor the horse 16:1,
but if you think you have what it takes, it will put $1,500 in your pocket!
If man is defeated and the equine variety wins, the rider of that fine animal will pocket $500.

Your finish times are determined two ways:
Runners: Your time stops when you cross the finish line.
Riders: You have to do more than just cross the finish line.
Your time stops when your horses pulse rate is 60 bpm.

1st through 3rd in each age/gender division will receive a buckle and all finishers will receive finishers medals.

All participants will also be rewarded with a (fresh brewed on-site) beverage of their choice. Whether it is an Indian Wells Brewing Co micro-brewed masterpiece (bring your ID), locally brewed Rocket Fizz Soda, or artesian spring water served cold in a Man vs Horse souvenir pint glass, and a custom shirt.

The concept: The 10 mile distance is a Man vs Horse event and is open to walkers, runners and riders competing head-to-head (there is a slightly staggered start). Dogs are welcome in the 10 miler and aid will be provided to them as well. Dogs must remain on leashes at all times.

Aid Stations:
There are water stations every two miles and full aid every four miles.

Course Description:

You begin your journey at the base of Indian Wells Canyon (at Indian Wells Brewing CO.) The first 2 miles are easy going with a little sand and rock, the next two miles get gradually steeper and many will be reduced to a walk by the time you hit the first full aid station. After that it is an easy uphill grade to the highest point ~1100 feet above the start and a quick downhill four mile finish. This 10 miler is open to walkers, joggers, and speed demons alike. There are some moderate hill climbs that will not exactly help you log a new PR, but if you're looking for a 10 mile experience in a laid-back environment with plenty of aid, this is for you!

AWARDS:
Finishers will be rewarded a fresh brewed beverage of their choice. Whether it's an (made on site) Indian Wells Brewing Co micro-brewed beer (bring your ID), locally brewed Rocket Fizz Soda, or artesian spring water served up to you cold in a Man vs Horse souvenir pint glass. 1st through 3rd in each age/gender division will receive a buckle and all others will receive finishers medals
